ABOUT CCDC DESIGN ASSISTANCE EDUCATION SPARK! EVENTS RESOURCES NEIGHBORHOODS CITYSPACE  
 

CCDC hosts monthly exhibits in its Downtown Mall gallery space in order to provide a venue for education and discussion of issues concerning design and development with an emphasis on affordable housing, sustainability and community development. Each exhibit opens on the First Friday of the month, in conjunction with the traditional First Fridays openings at many downtown Charlottesville art galleries. All CCDC monthly exhibits and First Fridays opening receptions are free and open to the public.

January 2009 - Energy Matters
CCDC started off the new year with an exhibit put on by Spark! -the energy initiative of the design center. The interactive exhibit focused on energy efficiency in Charlottesville, as well as educated visitors about what they can do to decrease their personal energy use and move toward zero energy homes.

 

February 2009 - Children at Play
In February, CCDC displayed UVa School of Architecture student Karl Krause's research on children's perceptions of their cities - present and future.  The exhibit featured an interactive computer element, as well as drawings by children in four cities across the United States.

arch 2009 – The Places & Faces of Building Goodness Foundation
For ten years, Building Goodness Foundation volunteers have used creativity and skills to build communities and improve lives.  Their projects are found in communities that need help the most -- Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras, the Gulf Coast and right here in Charlottesville. This photo exhibit is BGF work through the eyes of volunteers; the people met along the way captured through their camera lenses.

 
 
April 2009 – Preservation Piedmont, Preserving Place = Sustaining Community
Preserving Place = Sustaining Communities presents a broad range of contemporary issues in preservation both locally and nationally. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about local preservation successes as well as buildings that have been demolished, ongoing debates in the preservation community, and how to take advantage of local and national preservation.

 

 

May 2009 - Urban Places, Rural Spaces
The community is invited to visit this unique art exhibit that uses words, images and interactive elements to explore the relationship between urban and rural environments in Charlottesville and Albemarle. The exhibit features an installation designed by local artists and large-scale photographs by Robert Llewellyn

July –  August  2009 - In Play: JRGBC Green Spaces Competition
Our current development decisions put into play a series of events that dictate the future environmental, social, and economic course of a property for generations to come. Play Space is a place that looks to the future and aims to provide the support necessary for achieving carbon neutrality on a community scale. See the winning entries from this 2009 competition hosted by the James River Green Building Council on display in the CCDC gallery through August.

 

 

September 2009 - CCDC’s 5th Anniversary!
On September 3, 2004 a small group of volunteers worked tirelessly to open the doors of an old bakery at 101 E. Main St. with a vision for engaging the community in transforming Charlottesville into a more sustainable, beautiful and equitable place. Through partnerships with design professionals, developers, local government, the non-profit community and the public, the Charlottesville Community Design Center has spent the last five years working to achieve this vision.  Our September exhibition showcases the people, places and projects that shaped CCDC in its first five years and invites you to share your vision for Charlottesville's future.

 

 

 

 October –  November  2009 - Design Marathon

On Friday October 2nd, teams of local professional designers will provide pro-bono design services to ten deserving Charlottesville area non-profit organizations. Each creative team will include one student pursuing a design-related degree.

Potential projects include branding, brochures, advertisements, schematic building or space renovation drawings, drawings for ADA compliance, or broader site planning.

 

 

December – January - Neighborhood ReGeneration
Neighborhood ReGeneration is a compilation of work developed by the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA) and students at Charlottesville High School and the University of Virginia that reflects the transformation of Charlottesville’s public housing community over the last several decades as it looks toward the future.
